Michael Makowski
In 1978, Michael Makowski started a landscape supply yard, simply called Michael Makowski Company, on property used by his father's company, Michael Makowski Hauling.
The younger Michael Makowski was only 16 at the time. He attended high school in the morning, worked his company from noon to 4 p.m., and worked in the shipping department for Plumbmaster from 4 p.m. until midnight.
Michael grew his business with a personal loan from his 80 year old grandmother, Margaret Makowski. He repaid the loan and advanced the company until 1982 when he took time off to study business at Brandywine College in Wilmington, DE. After that, Michael decided to work full-time on growing and maintaining his family business.
Ten years later, Michael Makowski had seven trucks, two loaders, and a soil screening plant. That's when his accountant suggested incorporation. As a result, Michael Makowski, Inc. was established in 1993. Five years later, Michael Makowski purchased his father's property.
Michael Makowski and Best Mulch, Inc. contribute to the local community - donating bulk de-icing salt to Concord Township, providing (at cost) a custom grind of mulch for a local dog park used by people and dogs within a 20 mile radius, and donating products and services to local churches, Cub Scouts, and local families in need.
